  • Learning To Pray

I painted this piece while still an art student living in New York City. My student years were difficult ones, filled with health challenges, financial strain,  and loneliness. At times, I deeply regretted my choice of profession and nearly quit once or twice. Four blocks down from the private academy I attended was a parish called St. Vincent Ferrer. During breaks at school, I would seek out the refuge of this house of prayer. The quiet side chappel pictured here was a favorite spot. My life was forever changed in this place, because it was here that I first perceived, in prayer, the clear leading of the Holy Spirit. That’s right, a Baptist, sitting in a Catholic church learning to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit!

When I look at this painting now, a number of things stand out.. I am reminded of God’s faithfulness through life’s dark and confusing times. I am struck by the foreshadowing of what I see happening in the Church right now - the walls between us are thinning and Chirsitans from all traditions are being drawn together by the power of the Holy Spirit. And finally, I am reminded of the vital importance of prayer. If you are worried, pray. If you don’t know which way to go, pray. If you feel  alone, pray. If you seek Him, you will find Him!

Side note: It was quite a surprise when the nation was grieving the loss of Ivana Trump, to see her family on the steps of a church in New York and recognize the church as St. Vincent Ferrer!
